Including germ cell tumours.
This map explains ovarian, fallopian tube and primary peritoneal cancer step by step: what it is, the types, the tests, the stages, the treatment and its side effects.

Tap a type on the map.
Why this matters: the type decides the treatment and the outlook. Germ cell tumours in young women are among the most curable cancers.
Rare tumours such as granulosa cell tumour, which can make hormones and cause irregular bleeding. Usually slow growing; surgery is the main treatment.

Show how far the cancer has spread in the tummy, chest and lymph nodes, and help the surgeon plan.
A needle biopsy of the tumour or omentum, or fluid testing, confirms the cancer when chemotherapy is given first. Otherwise the diagnosis is made at surgery. A diagnostic laparoscopy helps decide whether complete removal is possible.
Before starting chemotherapy, immunotherapy or targeted therapy, these tests check that you are fit for treatment, and give a starting point to compare with later.
| Test | Why it is done |
|---|---|
| CBC (complete blood count) | Haemoglobin, white cells and platelets. Treatment can lower them. |
| RFT (kidney function) | Many medicines are cleared by the kidneys; the dose may need to change. |
| LFT (liver function) | Many medicines are processed by the liver. |
| Viral markers: HBsAg, anti-HCV, HIV | Hepatitis B can flare up during treatment. If positive, a tablet is given to prevent this. |
| Blood sugar (and HbA1c if diabetic) | Steroids given with chemotherapy can raise blood sugar. |
| ECG and 2D Echo | Check the heart rhythm and pumping before treatment, as some medicines affect the heart. |
Before immunotherapy, also:

| Serum TSH (thyroid) | Immunotherapy can affect the thyroid gland. |
| Serum cortisol (morning sample) | Immunotherapy can affect the adrenal and pituitary glands. |
Sometimes needed, depending on your treatment:
Your doctor will choose the tests that apply to you. Some of them are repeated during treatment.

Limited to one or both ovaries or fallopian tubes. The aim is cure.
Spread to other organs in the pelvis, such as the womb or bladder surface. The aim is cure.
Spread to the lining of the tummy (peritoneum) outside the pelvis, or to lymph nodes. This is the commonest stage at diagnosis, and primary peritoneal cancer is always stage 3 or 4. Treatment aims for long-term control, and cure in some.
Spread beyond the tummy: fluid around the lungs, inside the liver, or other organs.
Treatment is planned by the gynae-oncology surgeon and medical oncologist together. Tap your stage on the map.
